Going to the movies has always been a favorite pastime in Greensboro. And with a variety of genres available and many venues to experience, Greensboro has always offered movie experiences that are sure to please.

terraceThe Terrace Theater was one of the first movie theaters in Greensboro that opened in the 60s as a single screen theater. By the 70s it had grown and added a second theater. Situated at the corner of Friendly Shopping Center, the Terrace was a great place for families and children. It offered lots of Disney flicks and had great specials just for children. On Saturdays children could bring a canned good and enjoy a great show. The theater offered a few additional screens before it closed in the 90s. It was bulldozed and replaced with a chain restaurant. Friendly Center now offers The Regal Grand a multiplex of 16 theaters. The Grand offers offer stadium-style seating, state of the art surround sound, comfortable chairs, and handicap access.

circle6Other great multiplex theaters in Greensboro were the Carolina Circle 6 at Carolina Circle Mall and the Janus Theaters. The Janus also opened in the 60s and the first films shown were “Yellow Submarine” and “Elvira Madigan”. It eventually went from two screens to eight and was one of the first multiplexes in the area. It was also well known for showing artsy types of movies. Like the TerraceJanus Theaters saw its demise in 2000. The Carousel Theaters opened just down the road on Battleground Avenue. It shows mainstream movies, but is also touted for showing non-mainstream films. They have some small viewing rooms with comfortable seating.

Other theaters compete for movie business can be found throughout Greensboro and the surrounding area. While change is good for our community and growth inevitable, I still miss the Terrace and the Janus Theaters.

One long time theater that has survived in the Gate City is The Carolina Theater in downtown Greensboro. While mostly known as a historical landmark and a beautiful stage for special events, the Carolina still shows movies! And they show some real classics every month! Something fun and different for date night with your special loved one! We like to go every Christmas and watch It’s a Wonderful Life! The Carolina also shows great movies for kids, check out their Kids Club.
